ウエイン・ショーター、ハービー・ハンコック、ロン・カーター、トニー・ウィリアムスを擁するマイルスの黄金のクインテットが2日間にわたってシカゴのプラグド・ニッケルに出演したのは1965年12月のこと。これはその時の演奏をすべて収録したボックスセット。実は92年にやはりボックスセットが日本発売されたが、あとに発売されたこのアメリカ盤には、曲目は同じながら日本盤より演奏時間の長いトラックが10曲入っている。そのためその10曲に関しては、その後日本盤の『クッキン・アット・ザ・プラグド・ニッケル』『ハイライト・フロム・ザ・プラグド・ニッケル』『モア・クッキン・アット・ザ・プラグド・ニッケル』にあらためてロング・バージョンが分散収録された。そんなややこしい話は勘弁してという人は、このアメリカ盤を買うのが得策だ。マイルスの黄金のクインテットがもっとも過激に疾走していた時代の記念碑的作品で、ウエインやトニーの猛烈なプレイにも圧倒される。いやはや、何度聴いても興奮してしまう白熱の演奏だ。
